Sconces were traditionally used to light castles and dark architectural masterpieces too large or too ancient for electrical outlets and wiring. Today, an art deco wall sconce may hold a candle like the old times, or a contemporary and modern lamp fixture. Sconces are simple holding devices with bracket systems that normally fasten to a flat service like a wall or a ceiling, but an aggressive progression in design and home decorating has created new possibilities.
Art deco sconces play a large role in the atmosphere of a room. The dim and possibly colored light can provide a warm feeling through darker stained glass encasings. Some sconces are large enough to take up an entire section of a wall, making them a great opportunity for providing a focal piece. Antique styles are available, along with very basic models that fit well into modern style living spaces. Some sconces do not reveal the light source by completing covering the bulb, which often results in a dimmer, calmer room style.

Art Deco Sconce
Art deco wall scones fasten to walls in outdoor and indoor environments. Outdoor fixtures often attach to light sources that are sheltered from the rain and other weathering elements. Some sconces attach to posts and light up entire gardens at night; walkways become much easier to navigate when they are lit. Restaurants with outdoor patios and eating sections often incorporate the use of art deco sconces to match the style of their restaurant; fitting an individual lamp at each table is not always a feasible option. Many houses use a single sconce and light bulb above garage or door ways to reveal addresses for nighttime visitors.
Indoor art deco sconces work well in larger areas and rooms with high ceilings. Light fixtures attached too high from the ground do not provide vivid light, and those attached too close can be blinding. Sconces fit areas that offer dim light, such as movie theaters and restaurants. In the home, sconces with automatic sensors turn on at night to provide enough light to navigate but not enough to brighten the entire house. Placing multiple sconces along the walls near stairways can be very helpful.
